Job Opportunities at Chamber Music Society

Teaching Artists

The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS), the nation’s leading presenter of chamber music based at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York, seeks teaching artists for its music education program. Working closely with the Manager of Education Programs, Director of Education, and colleagues on the teaching roster, CMS teaching artists work in New York City classrooms to prepare students in grades 3-6 who are attending concerts in our Chamber Music Beginnings series. The concerts are designed to illuminate basic musical concepts through performance of chamber music repertoire, discussion, and demonstration. Teaching artists design lessons based on a curriculum outlined by the CMS Education Department that engage students in active learning to help them understand the music they will hear at the concerts and the underlying concepts. Teaching artists are engaged on a free-lance basis according to their availability and the needs of the program.

Teaching schedule outline:

Chamber Music Beginnings consists of four units, and most participating schools attend all four concerts. Teaching artists are scheduled to visit each class once prior to each concert for approximately 45 minutes.

• Teaching artists should be available to visit schools four times a year, two to three weeks in advance of each concert.

Other Responsibilities include:

• Attending four or five two-hour planning meetings during the course of the year related to the curriculum .

• Submitting lesson plans for review by staff in advance of school visits.

• Scheduling classroom sessions at assigned schools and maintaining an open communication line with the participating classroom teachers regarding the program.

• Filing follow-up reports reflecting on your work and the students’ involvement in your lessons.

Next season will also include opportunities for teaching artists to perform in small ensembles at schools as one of the four units presented during the year.

Candidates should have a significant background in music education and performance, preferably with a degree in music, and have demonstrated an ability to work successfully in school environments with students grades 3-6. Prior experience as a teaching artist working in a similar context as described above is highly desirable.
