Three CMS Two Artists win Avery Fisher Career Grants

Pianist Gilles Vonsattel, clarinetist Jose Franch-Ballester, and the Jupiter String Quartet—all current members of CMS Two—have been awarded 2008 Avery Fisher Career Grants. You can hear Vonsattel perform in CMS’ upcoming concerts featuring the chamber music of Sergei Rachmaninov on May 9 and 11, and the Jupiters take part in the May 1 Rose Studio Concert at 6:30 or 9:30 PM (tickets are available only for the 9:30 performance). Franch-Ballester is done for the season, but appears many times next season.

The awards were announced in a special ceremony at Lincoln Center. You can hear the Avery Fisher 2008 Career Grant announcement and performances – featuring these three artists – on Monday, April 28, from 7-8pm on WQXR-FM (96.3). The award includes $25,000 which the artists may put toward professional assistance. A part of the Avery Fisher Artist Program (named for its benefactor), the grants, for instrumentalists only, have been awarded annually since 1976. Such notable artists as Jonathan Biss, Hilary Hahn, and the Miró Quartet—CMS Two program alumni—have been awarded grants in the past. A total of 109 grants have been made, and up to five are awarded per year.

CMS is proud of the accomplishments of these engaging and talented artists!
