In a special press conference on May 6, Lincoln Center announced the Opening Nights Festival, a series of events designed to celebrate the highly anticipated reopening of Alice Tully Hall in February and March, 2008. All of the regular occupants of Tully Hall—in addition to the Chamber Music Society, those are Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Inc, The Juilliard School, and The Film Society of Lincoln Center—will present an enormous range of events with tickets available for all events at $25 or less.
Alice Tully Hall was originally built for the Chamber Music Society, and CMS Artistic Directors David Finckel and Wu Han pointed out that the first concert presented solely by CMS during the Festival, Coming Home on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, will begin with the first piece that opened the first concert performed in the hall in 1969, Bach’s Trio Sonata in C major for Flute, Violin, and Continuo, BWV 1037. In a nod to CMS’ storied history, David and Wu Han pointed out that Charles Wadsworth, CMS’ founding artistic director, will be at the keyboard for the Bach. But David and Wu Han also demonstrated their keen focus on CMS’ exciting future by including commissioned works from Season Composers William Bolcom and George Tsontakis on the concerts as well.
The second of CMS’ celebratory concerts is on Friday, February 27, 2009. Violinst Daniel Hope leads an ensemble in Stravinsky’s remarkable Histoire du Soldat, with narration by Oscar-nominated actor Klaus Maria Brandauer. Through the concert, War and Pieces, CMS will examine the relationship between music and battle.
The Belcea Quartet has a spot on the roster of celebratory concerts with its appearance on Wednesday, March 4, 2009. Schubert’s evergreen Death and the Maiden quartet anchors the program.
Even CMS’ family series, Meet the Music! appears in the opening celebration. Bring the kids to Alice Tully Hall on Sunday, March 8, 2009, and enjoy It’s About Time, led by the always ingenious Bruce Adolphe.
Tickets to these and all the Opening Nights Festival will be available to the public beginning May 28. Read more about the entire festival by clicking here.
