In the summer of 2007, the Chamber Music Society was thrilled to help kick off a sublime new chamber music festival located in rural Kentucky. Over the recent Memorial Day weekend, artists from CMS returned to the picturesque rolling hills surrounding The Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill as old friends.
Artistic Directors David Finckel and Wu Han, violinist Arnaud Sussmann, violist Beth Guterman, the Orion String Quartet, and Jihyun Kim, Production and Touring Coordinator, journeyed to horse country and presented five private and public concerts. Certainly the performance space, an airy rehabbed tobacco barn nestled in the hills, was among the most inspiring and unusual venues in which CMS has performed. And judging by the comments, the mixture of this charming venue, charismatic musicians, and superb chamber music was a huge success! One reviewer said, “It was sweet to hear the musicians emerge from loud spirited passages and be joined by a choir of birds,” and a concert goer raved, “I loved the concert, the setting, the morning, the whole idea. The room was perfect for chamber music and the quartet played with a fine mix of precision and ease that connected with its audience intimately. This is a great place to hear music.”
