An absolutely extraordinary gathering occured at Thursday’s New Music in the Rose program. Season Composers Nicholas Maw, Bright Sheng, and Leon Kirchner attended the concert of their works, the second in our series of new music concerts. A packed house in the Rose Studio heard important works from these three mavericks. More than the music, the audience was treated to interviews with and commentary from the composers themselves, led by Bruce Adolphe.
The New York Times praised the concert in a review on February 3, calling Maw’s String Quartet, performed by CMS Two member the Daedalus Quartet, “rich in shapely, emotionally resonant themes.” The Times goes on to say that Sheng’s Four Movements for Piano Trio was given a “moving, persuasive performance” by Sheng on piano, violinist Susie Park, and cellist Fred Sherry, and complemented Gilles Vonsattel’s” strong, nuanced key-board articulation” and “rich-toned, beautifully-shaped string playing” by violinist Lily Francis and cellist Priscilla Lee in Kirchner’s “rugged, spiky” Piano Trio.
The concert format provided a time of question and answer, as well as informal chats with the composers.
