Program Description: For two centuries after the death of Henry Purcell in 1695, the English musical voice fell mute. Then in 1899, Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations turned all heads toward the British Isles as something new and distinctly English awakened. Young English composers began writing in a language all their own, drawing inspiration from their country’s bloved landscape and noble heritage to write music that is charming and sentimental in one moment, daring and visionary in the next.
Please be aware that there are two separate tour programs, depending on the date of presentation.
