What defines the sound of America? We explore this question through American music spanning hundreds of years. We offer two focal points to this program—either American mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe and longtime collaborator Alan Louis Smith’s moving song cycle based on Margaret A. Frink’s daily journal during her passage by covered wagon towards dreams of California gold; or Charles Ives’ Piano Trio. Written in remembrance of his days at Yale, Ives’ work incorporates popular tunes, mixes the sacred and profane, and reveals the vigorous New England spirit that his music uniquely captures.
Note: Ives program does not include Stephanie Blythe
Artists: Stephanie Blythe, mezzo-soprano; Warren Jones, Anne-Marie McDermott, pianos; Lily Francis, Ani Kavafian, violins; Paul Neubauer, viola; Priscilla Lee, cello
