Portrait of Rachmaninov

While criticized by contemporary critics, Rachmaninov’s unmistakable voice—grandly romantic, lushly colored, continuously fascinating—has found its way through to join the chorus of 20th Century masters. This program—a survey of the composer’s output spanning almost fifty years—provides insight into Rachmaninov’s sonic world: including the brooding two-piano Suite No. 2; his late masterpiece, Symphonic Dances, in its original version for two pianos; and his moving and grand Trio elegiaque in D minor, written in pained response to his mentor Tchaikovsky’s passing.

Artists: Inon Barnatan, Gilbert Kalish, Gilles Vonsattel, pianos; Ida Kavafian, violin; Gary Hoffman, cello
