Baroque Inspirations

In a program of glittering gems, CMS shines a light on some of the Baroque period’s great treasures. The program begins with a nod to Henry Purcell’s 350th birthday. Bach, Baroque’s grandmaster, is well represented in three works that display his unique grasp of spiritually heightened counterpoint, and Pachelbel’s popular Canon in D is here paired with its original Gigue. The program concludes with Vivaldi’s exploration of one of the Baroque era’s most famous melodies in his virtuosic and sparkling La Follia variations.

Program:

  • Henry Purcell Trio Sonata No. 10 in D major for Two Violins and Continuo, Z. 811 (1697)
  • Johann Sebastian Bach Sonata in G major for Cello and Piano, BWV 1027 (before 1741)
  • Trio Sonata in G major for Flute, Oboe, and Continuo, BWV 1039 (c. 1736-41)
