“Everyone listened reverently, with an almost religious respect… Not one person stirred” recalled the cellist who played the premiere of French composer Olivier Messiaen’s extraordinary Quartet for the End of Time. That concert, one of history’s most moving and unique, took place in a frigid hall at the Nazi camp where the composer was interned in the winter of 1941. CMS frames this transcendental masterpiece with works by Messiaen’s countrymen, Debussy and Ravel, highlighting the unique mystique, elegance, and atmospheric beauty of French music.

Artists: Anne-Marie McDermott, piano; Ani Kavafian, violin; Nicolas Altstaedt, cello; David Shifrin, clarinet
