In a program of glittering gems, CMS shines a light on some of the Baroque period’s great treasures. The program begins with a nod to Henry Purcell’s 350th birthday. Bach, Baroque’s grandmaster, is well represented in three works that display his unique grasp of spiritually heightened counterpoint, and Pachelbel’s popular Canon in D is here paired with its original Gigue. The program also includes Vivaldi’s exploration of one of the Baroque era’s most famous melodies in his brilliantly sparkling La Follia variations, and concludes with Telemann’s virtuosic and colorful Concerto for Flute, Oboe, Violin and Continuo.
