The Chamber Music Society is pleased to announce its third consecutive Memorial Day residency at the Chamber Music Festival of the Bluegrass in Pleasant Hill, Kentucky. This season, CMS presents four diverse programs of classical masterworks performed by eight members of its outstanding roster of world-renowned musicians.

In its final concert of the season, Meet the Music!, the Chamber Music Society’s series for families with kids ages 6 and up, presents Zephyronia, Sunday, May 17 at 1pm and 3pm in the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse. Zephyronia, an original composition by CMS Director of Family Programs Bruce Adolphe, is a comic musical parable about wind energy for wind instruments, written for the Grammy-nominated ensemble Imani Winds.

In its final concerts of the season, the Chamber Music Society celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Felix Mendelssohn with a variety of works from the composer’s rich body of chamber music. The concerts take place Sunday, May 17 at 5pm and, in a closing night gala honoring James D. Wolfensohn, Tuesday, May 19 at 8pm.

In the final New Music in the Rose concert of the season on May 7, at 7:30 PM in the Rose Studio, the Chamber Music Society presents works by Kati Agócs, Kristin Kuster, David Ludwig, William Bolcom, and George Tsontakis.

In the final presentation in its series of free master classes for the current season CMS welcomes composer William Bolcom, Wednesday, May 6 at 11am in the Rose Studio.
During the two-hour span of the class, Mr. Bolcom will work with composition students from local conservatories whose work, either in progress or recently completed, will be heard in live performances.

In its final International String Quartet Series concert of the season, the Chamber Music Society presents the acclaimed Jerusalem Quartet, Wednesday, April 29, 7:30pm. in Alice Tully Hall. The program includes Haydn’s String Quartet in C major, Op. 33, No. 3, (“The Bird”), Bartók’s String Quartet No. 4, Sz. 91, BB 93; and Borodin’s String Quartet No. 2 in D major.

The Chamber Music Society features the work of CMS Season Composer George Tsontakis, April 17 at 7:30pm, and April 19 at 5pm in Alice Tully Hall. The program includes two New York premieres by Tsontakis: KnickKnacks for Violin and Viola (2001), and the Quartet No. 3 for Piano, Violin, Viola, and Cello (2005)

On Thursday, April 16 at 6:30pm and 9:30pm, the Chamber Music Society’s Rose Studio Concerts series will present works by Dmitri Shostakovich and Sophia Gubaidulina. The program will be performed by pianist Wu Han, and the Jupiter String Quartet (Nelson Lee, Meg Freivogel, violins; Liz Freivogel, viola; Daniel McDonough, cello).

On Thursday, April 2 at 7:30pm, the Chamber Music Society’s New Music in the Rose series presents works by Sebastian Currier: Verge for Clarinet, Violin, and Piano (1997); Jo Kondo: Beginning, Middle, and End for Flute and String Quartet (1987); and John Zorn: Necronomicon for String Quartet.

This year, the Chamber Music Society’s annual Winter Festival presents Around Prokofiev, a fascinating look at the life and work of one of the world’s most popular yet elusive composers, Sergei Prokofiev. This multi-concert event begins with an opening symposium on March 3, and is followed by six concert programs, March 5, 8, 13, 15, 17, and 19.
