Rimsky-Korsakov once warned his student Stravinsky about Debussy’s music: “Don’t listen to it, otherwise you risk getting accustomed to it, and end up liking it!” In spite of this, the young Stravinsky fell under the sway of Debussy’s Afternoon of a Faun, and the two composers eventually became friends, rivals, and lifelong correspondents.
