Nicholas Tzavaras
CelloNicholas Tzavaras, a native of East Harlem, has enjoyed a distinguished career as a chamber musician, soloist, and educator for almost three decades. From 2000 until 2024, Tzavaras was the cellist of the Shanghai Quartet, recording more than 27 albums on several labels. He also served as guest principal cellist of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra from 2009 to 2024. A graduate of the Bronx High School of Science, he went on to earn degrees from the New England Conservatory and SUNY Stony Brook, as well as an MBA from Montclair State University. Tzavaras has appeared in the motion pictures Music of the Heart, Melinda Melinda, and the Academy Award–nominated documentary Small Wonders. Formerly on the faculty of the Tianjin Juilliard School, Montclair State University, the Longy School of Music, and the University of Richmond, Tzavaras is the Senior Director of Artistic Planning & Educational Programs at the Brevard Music Center.
