Msimelelo Mbali

Currently in his first year of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at The Metropolitan Opera, South African bass, Msimelelo Mbali, is a rising star on the operatic stage. After taking the Baroque Prize at the Voices of South Africa International Opera Singing Competition in 2018, Msimelelo was invited to join the cast of Porgy and Bess at English National Opera. Having enjoyed success in the UK, he was then asked to join the National Opera Studio for the 2019/20 season.

Previous highlights for Msimelelo include debuts at Dutch National Opera and Theater an der Wien in Porgy and Bess and numerous showcases with the National Opera Studio at Welsh National Opera and Opera North in roles such as Plutone in L’Orfeo, Second Elder in Handel’s Susanna, Don Alfonso in Così fan Tutte and Collatinus in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia.

In the 2021-22 season, Msimelelo will perform the Undertaker in Porgy and Bess and the Flemish Deputy in Don Carlos at the Metropolitan Opera.
