National Radio Series 2024–2025

American Quintets

First Aired Aug 13, 2025
audio Audio / Radio Program

The songfulness of American music is on full display in the two quintets heard on this CMS Radio program. John Harbison, one of America’s greatest living composers, has a long history working with the Chamber Music Society. In his touching Songs America Loves to Sing, he conjures the image of a family standing around the piano and coming together in communal harmony to sing some of their favorite tunes. This suite of short pieces for violin, cello, flute, clarinet, and piano draws on an inspired collection of national treasures, from “Amazing Grace” to the “St. Louis Blues” to the tried and true “Birthday Song.” On the second half of the program, we hear the glorious A minor Piano Quartet of Florence Price, which was part of an astonishing stash of her compositions that was only discovered in 2009. In this quintet, we hear her unique blend of Romantic form and harmony with elements of American and African American traditional styles. From the lush opening Allegro to the playful Juba Dance, this work is characteristic of Price’s distinctive voice in American music.
