National Radio Series 2024–2025

Macabre

First Aired Aug 20, 2025
audio Audio / Radio Program

Music can make us laugh and cry, but it also has the power to terrify us. On this program, we hear three chamber works that aim to create eerie atmospheres and the sense that anything could be lurking around the corner. The String Trio by Krysztof Penderecki opens with a sequence of horrifying, dissonant chords, and though it develops into something less frightening, the music maintains a sense that it could turn demonic at any moment. In Conte Fantastique, André Caplet creates a musical setting of the story “The Masque of Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe, the American poet and author whose works continue to inspire fear in the hearts of readers. The program closes with Maurice Ravel’s haunting piano tone poem Gaspard de la Nuit, which features musical depictions of a dangerous water spirit, a hanged man, and a monstrous goblin who keeps growing larger and larger.
