Poignant Works for Strings and Piano

audio Audio / Radio Program

Combining the keyboard with string instruments has always been a delicate art for composers, but when it works, it is both poignant and powerful. In the first work on the program, David Serkin Ludwig’s 2013 Aria Fantasy, the composer brings together a piano and three string players for a meditation on one of the greatest keyboard works of all time: J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations. He took inspiration from its famous aria, producing a dreamy landscape that eventually reveals its connection to that source piece. In Ludwig’s words, “Starry sounds of toy boxes playing distant themes lead to strident and angular piano figurations, which then lead to languid falling scales which in turn lead to fast and irregular crooked dances.” On the second half of the program, we are jolted awake by the gasps and cries of the Piano Trio in D minor by the Russian Romantic composer Anton Arensky. The piece contains a sombre, elegiac third movement that Arensky wrote in memory of a friend, and the whole work is tied together with burning, tragic passion.
