The Paris that Mendelssohn visited for five months in 1831 seethed with artistic and societal upheaval. France’s music, in the hands of natives Berlioz and Gounod and the foreigners Liszt, Meyerbeer, and Chopin, would have to wait until the end of the century for its true golden age. This program, celebrating the zenith of French chamber music, gathers four works of unparalleled genius by the two composers who have come to define, more than any others, the musical essence of their country.
