The Beethoven Piano Sonatas
The journey from Beethoven's first piano sonata to his last is among the most astonishing and consequential achievements in the history of music. Esteemed pianist Gilles Vonsattel presents this monumental cycle in eight concerts (a landmark first in CMS history) spanning the entire season—two in Alice Tully Hall, and six in the more intimate Rose Studio. Possessing consummate technique, stylistic integrity, and probing intellect, he has emerged as a descendant of history's most celebrated Beethoven interpreters.
Complementing the season-long exploration of the sonatas, Gilles Vonsattel will present a lecture series, providing a listener's guide and an interpreter's perspective from the piano. Each 75-minute lecture, delivered in the Rose Studio, explores different facets of Beethoven's creative Process and his development as a composer.
