The final program of CMS’s Winter Festival celebrates Mozart the inventor with two ensembles that were practically unheard of, yet would endure for centuries. Piano trios with clarinet would be adopted by Beethoven and Brahms; viola quintets by Mendelssohn and Dvořák. And, once again following Haydn’s example, Mozart contributes a conventional piano trio of radiant beauty.

Program

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

(1756–1791)

Trio in E-flat major for Clarinet, Viola, and Piano, K. 498, “Kegelstatt”

(1786)
Quick Note

Quick Note

Mozart's "Kegelstatt" Trio was reportedly composed while playing skittles (a lawn game similar to bowling), hence its nickname.

Listen for the seamless blending of the clarinet, viola, and piano voices as Mozart showcases the unique timbres and expressive capabilities of each instrument.
