The evening begins with Jacques Ibert’s Trois pièces brèves for wind quintet, a sparkling work of wit and charm. Each movement offers a different character, from playful energy to lyrical calm, leading to a finale full of rhythmic vitality. A delightful contrast follows with Vincent Youmans’s Tahiti Trot, famously based on the song “Tea for Two” and arranged for wind quintet with irresistible flair. The program then turns to Brahms’s Trio in E-flat major for Horn, Violin, and Piano, Op. 40. Composed in memory of his mother, this deeply personal masterpiece blends warmth and nobility with expressive power, uniting the golden voice of the horn with soaring violin lines and richly textured piano writing. After intermission, Robert Schumann’s Quartet in E-flat major for Piano, Violin, Viola, and Cello, Op. 47, closes the program. One of the cornerstones of the Romantic chamber music repertoire, it moves from a noble opening to a fleet scherzo, a tender and lyrical andante, and a finale of sweeping brilliance, capturing both intimacy and grandeur in equal measure.

CMS’s tour to China is made possible by the generous support of US-China Cultural Institute in honor and memory of our dear friend Shirley Young.
