The program opens with Mozart’s Quartet in E-flat major for Piano, Violin, Viola, and Cello, K. 493, a radiant work from the composer’s most creative years in Vienna. Balancing elegance with expressive depth, it moves from a sparkling Allegro to a tender Larghetto and closes with a graceful and spirited Allegretto. The concert continues with selections from Max Bruch’s Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano, Op. 83. These lyrical miniatures reveal Bruch’s gift for warmth and expressive contrast, shifting between intimate songlike lines and vigorous, animated passages. After intermission, Ernst von Dohnányi’s Sextet in C major, Op. 37, brings the evening to a vibrant conclusion. Written in 1935, this rarely performed work blends late Romantic lyricism with modern verve, unfolding in a sequence of movements that are passionate, lyrical, and exuberant, and culminating in a finale of dazzling brilliance.

CMS’s tour to China is made possible by the generous support of US-China Cultural Institute in honor and memory of our dear friend Shirley Young.
