This program begins with selections from Max Bruch’s Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano, Op. 83. These miniatures, written late in the composer’s life, highlight his gift for heartfelt lyricism and warmth, moving between tender, songlike phrases and playful, spirited exchanges. The concert continues with Brahms’ Trio in E-flat major for Horn, Violin, and Piano, Op. 40. Composed in memory of his mother, this deeply personal work blends elegiac lyricism with heroic intensity, interweaving the horn’s noble voice, the violin’s soaring lines, and the piano’s rich harmonies. After intermission, the evening culminates in Ernst von Dohnányi’s Sextet in C major, Op. 37. Written in 1935, the sextet is a rare and exhilarating work that combines late Romantic richness with modern vitality. From its impassioned opening to its exuberant finale, it showcases the full range of chamber music’s expressive power, from the intimate to the brilliant.

CMS’s tour to China is made possible by the generous support of US-China Cultural Institute in honor and memory of our dear friend Shirley Young.
