The Sublime
Brahms: Trio in A minor for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano, Op. 114
SOMETHING TO KNOW:
Brahms came back from semi-retirement to write this trio for the clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld. Brahms admired Mühlfeld so much that he would go on to write a quintet and two sonatas for him.
SOMETHING TO LISTEN FOR:
Brahms masterfully blends the clarinet and cello, particularly in the slow second movement, which sounds like a love duet.
Recorded live in Alice Tully Hall on January 24, 2017.
