The Power of Music
Shostakovich: Trio No. 2 in E minor for Piano, Violin, and Cello, Op. 67
SOMETHING TO KNOW:
Shostakovich dedicated this trio to his close friend Ivan Sollertinsky, a music critic and lecturer who died suddenly in February 1944. The elegiac tone was probably also a reflection on the devastation wrought by the Nazis after years of war.
SOMETHING TO LISTEN FOR:
The last movement is a relentless, bitter dance that recalls the somber music from earlier movements toward the end.
Recorded live in Alice Tully Hall on May 9, 2017.
Video produced by Ibis Productions.
