Building on the earlier traditions of the piano quintet, Elgar’s A-minor Quintet was composed later in his career, during a time of reflection just after World War I. Likewise, Brahms’s Third Violin Sonata has a sense of nostalgia, written towards the end of his compositional career. Beethoven’s fifth and final cello sonata is arguably his first “late-period” work.
