Edgar Meyer to Join the Dover Quartet for Their CMS Debut

January 3, 2023

CMS welcomes the Dover Quartet to their debut on our stage, January 17. They are joined by composer and double bassist Edgar Meyer for a performance of his Quintet for String Quartet and Bass, a piece with a connection to CMS history: it was performed at Alice Tully Hall in 1996 with Meyer and the Emerson String Quartet, which at the time included cellist David Finckel, now Co-Artistic Director of CMS. Meyer’s quintet stands firmly in the American tradition of synthesizing many different musical styles, as one would expect from a composer and performer who is equally comfortable in classical, bluegrass, jazz, and other idioms. The program also includes a quartet by Amy Beach (another great American combiner of disparate musical traditions) and two classics of the string quartet repertoire by Haydn and Mendelssohn.

The Dover Quartet was formed in 2008 at the Curtis Institute of Music, and since that time has won major awards, including first prizes at the Fischoff, Wigmore Hall, and Banff International String Quartet competitions, as well as an Avery Fisher Career Grant. In 2020, they were appointed the Penelope P. Watkins Ensemble in Residence at Curtis, a faculty residency that they are the first to hold. Last year, their recording of Schumann’s string quartets was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Our concert featuring the Dover Quartet and Edgar Meyer takes place at Alice Tully Hall on January 17, 2023, at 7:30 PM.
