Summer Residency at SPAC
This August CMS returned to Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY to perform six concerts at the SPA Little Theatre. Read more about our residency and see photos from the summer.
Music critic Joseph Dalton from Albany’s Times Union reviewed the opening concert featuring the Danish String Quartet, pianist Juho Pohjonen, and cellist Jakob Koranyi.
“...Beethoven's Quartet in G Major Op. 18, No. 2, was an ideal vehicle to showcase the Danish Quartet. Their sound was crystalline, finely polished, pristine yet not precious...they seemed to operate at two dynamic levels, resulting in a gorgeous layering of sounds within sounds."
"...the quartet's sound was striking, with a tactile presence, like grains of sand."
"Cellist Jakob Koranyi started with a lean and wiry sound while pianist Juho Pohjonen showed an ever present gift for legato phrasing. Together they make a perfect picture."
"Schubert's Quintet in C Major Op. 163 brought Koranyi into the fold of the Danish Quartet and delivered to the wildly enthusiastic audience a treasure of the chamber music repertoire."
Geraldine Freedman from The Daily Gazette reviewed the second concert of the series with CMS Co-Artistic Director Wu Han.
"Pianist Wu Han and Finnish pianist Juho Pohjonen...worked well together feeling each other out for dynamic levels and phrasing."
On Brahms' Quintet in F minor, Op. 34, "Tempos were traditional, balances and ensemble were excellent. Pohjonen was forthright and everyone was exuberant."
