Composed to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the death of Henry Purcell, Britten’s second string quartet is much more than a tribute from one English composer to a celebrated predecessor. Britten revered the work of Purcell and sought in his own music to embody the same qualities he found in Purcell’s music: “clarity, brilliance, tenderness, and strangeness.”

This Inside Chamber Music lecture features a work from Winter Festival: Calidore String Quartet on February 27, 2024.

Each lecture is supported by live performance excerpts from the featured work.
