Soprano Tony Arnold is internationally acclaimed as a leading proponent of contemporary music in concert and recording. Her unique blend of vocal virtuosity and communicative warmth, combined with wide-ranging skills in education and leadership, was recognized with the 2015 Brandeis Creative Arts Award. Her extensive repertory includes major works written for her by many leading composers of our time. She is a member of the International Contemporary Ensemble and enjoys regular guest appearances with leading ensembles and presenters worldwide. With more than 30 discs to her credit, she has recorded a broad segment of the modern vocal repertory with esteemed chamber music colleagues. She is a first-prize laureate of the Gaudeamus International and the Louise D. McMahon competitions. A graduate of Oberlin College and Northwestern University, Arnold was twice a fellow of the Aspen Music Festival as both conductor and singer. She currently teaches at the Peabody Conservatory and the Tanglewood Music Center.
The profound influence of pianist Gilbert Kalish as an educator and pianist in myriad performances and recordings has established him as a major figure in American music-making. This season he appears with the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic, performs at the Ojai Music Festival, and holds a residency at the San Francisco Conservatory. In 2006 he was awarded the Peabody Medal by the Peabody Conservatory for his outstanding contributions to music in America. He was the pianist of the Boston Symphony Chamber Players for 30 years, and was a founding member of the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, a group that flourished during the 1960s and 70s in support of new music. He is particularly known for his partnership of many years with mezzo-soprano Jan DeGaetani, as well as for current collaborations with soprano Dawn Upshaw and cellists Timothy Eddy and Joel Krosnik. As an educator and performer he has appeared at the Banff Centre, the Steans Institute at Ravinia, the Marlboro Music Festival, and Music@Menlo; from 1985 to 1997 he served as chairman of the Tanglewood faculty. His discography of some 100 recordings embraces both the classical and contemporary repertories; of special note are those made with Ms. DeGaetani and that of Ives' Concord Sonata. A distinguished professor at SUNY Stony Brook, Mr. Kalish has been an Artist of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 2006.
Performer, curator, and on-stage host James Austin Smith “proves that an oboist can have an adventurous solo career” (The New Yorker). Smith appears at leading national and international chamber music festivals, as Co-Principal Oboe of the conductor-less Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and as an artist of the International Contemporary Ensemble. As Artistic and Executive Director of Tertulia Chamber Music, Smith creates intimate evenings of music, food, and drink in New York and San Francisco, as well as an annual festival in a variety of global destinations. He serves as Artistic Advisor to Coast Live Music in the San Francisco Bay Area and mentors graduate-level musicians as a professor of oboe and chamber music at Stony Brook University and as a regular guest at London's Guildhall School. A Fulbright scholar and alum of Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect and CMS’s Bowers Program, he holds degrees in music and political science from Northwestern and Yale University.
Harpist Bridget Kibbey is known for her great musical instincts that transcend her instrument. According to the New York Times, “she makes it seem as though her instrument had been waiting all its life to explode with the energetic figures and colors she was getting from it.” 2024–25 highlights include concerto debuts with the Baltimore Symphony and Richmond Symphony, and features at the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, the Helicon Foundation, and Chamber Music City. Kibbey collaborates with notable artists including Kathleen Battle, Dawn Upshaw, Avi Avital, and the Dover and Calidore String Quartets, while touring her own productions crossing French masterworks, Baroque transcriptions, and global music alongside today’s top Latin Jazz artists. Kibbey has recorded for Pentatone, Deutsche Grammophon, and SONY Records. She is a recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Premiere Prix at the Journées de les Harpes Compétition, and a Salon de Virtuosi SONY Recording Grant. She is an alum of CMS’s Bowers Program.
The first percussionist to join CMS’s Bowers Program, Ayano Kataoka is known for her brilliant technique and the distinctive elegance and imagination she brings to her performances. With cellist Yo-Yo Ma, she gave the world premiere of Bruce Adolphe’s Self Comes to Mind, and she has presented a solo recital on the B to C (Bach to Contemporary) series at Tokyo Opera City Recital Hall. Additional highlights include Steven Mackey’s Micro-Concerto at Alice Tully Hall; Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du soldat at 92nd Y with violinist Jaime Laredo and actors Alan Alda and Noah Wyle; and Bartók’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion at CMS with pianists Emanuel Ax and Yoko Nozaki. Ms. Kataoka is a full professor of percussion at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she received the 2023–24 Distinguished Faculty Lecture Series honor and the Chancellor’s Medal. She has also served as a visiting professor at Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and on the faculty of Yellow Barn and the So Percussion Summer Institute.
Praised for his “spectacular performances” (Wall Street Journal), and his “unfailing virtuosity” (Chicago Tribune), percussionist Ian Rosenbaum has developed a musical breadth far beyond his years. As a passionate advocate for contemporary music, Mr. Rosenbaum has premiered dozens of new chamber and solo works, and his recordings have been nominated for eight Grammy awards. In 2012, Mr. Rosenbaum joined the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Bowers Program (formerly CMS Two) as only the second percussionist selected in the program’s history. Mr. Rosenbaum is a founding member of Sandbox Percussion, and is on faculty at the Peabody Institute, the Mannes School of Music, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
