Welcome to the 2022-2023 Season
CMS’s 2022-2023 season is anchored by the towering figure of Franz Schubert. Although standing at only 5'1", “towering” accurately describes his role in music history and explains his continued presence on the world’s stages. Our Winter Festival, The Magic of Schubert, reveals the short-lived master in his many facets, from his carefree "The Shepherd on the Rock" to his haunting Winterreise. His indomitable spirit and creative activity undeterred by mortal illness, Schubert’s quality of resilience is present in many of our composers this season who overcame unimaginable obstacles, from Beethoven to Shostakovich to Ligeti to Coleridge-Taylor. Today, finding much in common with their heroic struggles, we proudly name our 2022-2023 season Resilience in their honor.
CMS is proud to present the legendary Emerson String Quartet in its final New York concert series, performing the repertoire for which it is most famous. Over three concerts, The Emerson traverses some of the greatest quartets in the classical canon, from the 17th to the 20th centuries, to trace the evolution of the string quartet and provide audiences the opportunity to hear how these composers and their seminal work were inspired by those who came before them and influenced those who followed.
Other highlights include the CMS debut of countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo in the first first CMS pairing of Handel and Vivaldi in one program – a study in contrasts, and a solid evening of terrific musical entertainment; the Danish String Quartet returns in a brilliant concert of Mozart, Britten, and Schumann; and the internationally renowned American violinist Pamela Frank makes a long-awaited return to the CMS stage for a unique concert of trios for two violins and viola.
