In Memoriam

Remembering Krzysztof Penderecki and Charles Wuorinen

April 2, 2020
Charles Wuorinen, Krzysztof Penderecki

CMS remembers two remarkable composers whom the music world lost this March.

Krzysztof Penderecki (November 23, 1933 – March 29, 2020), a Polish composer and conductor, was well-known in popular culture for his soundtracks for films like “The Exorcist” and “The Shining.” He was a prolific composer, with his work including operas, symphonies, and choral, chamber, and instrumental works. CMS had the privilege of performing his Trio for Violin, Viola, and Cello in Alice Tully Hall on November 14, 2017.

Charles Wuorinen (June 9, 1938 – March 11, 2020) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer. He composed more than 270 works, including works for orchestra, operas, chamber music, and solo instrumental and vocal works. An advocate for the modernist music movement and 12-tone writing, CMS was lucky to sit down for an interivew with Mr. Wuorinen to celebrate his 80 years of experience, craft, and skill. You can watch the full interview here.

Watch a performance of his Trio for Piano, Violin, and Cello from a past New Music concert on March 21, 2019.
