Serenade in D major for Flute, Violin, and Viola, Op. 25

Beethoven's Serenade is one of the earliest examples of a serenade written for this instrumental combination, consisting of six movements, a departure from the traditional four-movement structure of chamber music at the time.

Listen for the interplay between the flute, violin, and viola, particularly in the contrasting themes and textures of the second movement.

Franz Schubert

Rondo in A major for Violin and String Quartet, D. 438

Franz Schubert's Rondo remained unpublished during Schubert's lifetime and was only discovered and published posthumously.

Listen for Schubert's melodic ingenuity and lyrical beauty, particularly in the development and elaboration of the main rondo theme throughout the work.

Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst's virtuosic showpiece pays homage to Schubert's famous lied "Erlkönig."

Listen for Ernst's dazzling technical prowess as he transforms Schubert's haunting melody into a tour de force for the violin, exploring a wide range of techniques and expressive possibilities. Pay attention to the violin's role in portraying the different characters and emotions of the Erlkönig narrative, from the frantic gallop of the horse to the sinister whispers of the supernatural being.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

(1756–1791)

Quintet in C major for Two Violins, Two Violas, and Cello, K. 515

This quintet is one of Mozart's only two quintets for this instrumentation, composed in 1787 during a particularly fruitful period in his career, which also saw the composition of several other masterpieces, including his opera Don Giovanni and the Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor.

Listen for the interplay between the two violins, particularly in the opening Allegro movement, where they engage in lively dialogue, passing motifs back and forth. Pay attention to the expressive depth of the second movement, especially in the poignant melodies played by the violas.
